Year after year, the New Year holiday rolls around and everyone reveals their resolutions. It may be weight loss, career change, or personal goal. The motivation exists and many are determined to leave bad habits and people in the past.  The ball drops and time fast forwards to March; most of us have forgotten that we have even made New Year’s resolutions. This raises the question, “Why make New Year’s resolutions in the first place?” There are some methods of remembrance we can use to achieve our New Years goals.

You may have heard the cliche that you are more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. I am a firm believer in writing down my goals or resolutions. Use a notebook, journal, sticky note, tablet, or cell phone to write your resolutions down. Every day or several times a week log your progress towards your resolutions and include the date. If you have a day where you feel like you have not made any progress towards your resolution, re-write your goal and write the words “moving closer” underneath it.

Another way to stay on your resolution track is to make a resolution with a friend.  For example, let’s say you and a friend make the New Years resolution to lose 10 pounds.  The two of you can exercise together and keep each other motivated. When you go out to lunch, you will be able to pick healthy meals from the restaurant menu. If one friend starts to see results,  it will serve as motivation for the other and vice versa.

Furthermore, when setting your New Year’s resolutions be sure to give yourself a deadline. If you are a procrastinator and give yourself an unlimited amount of time to achieve your resolution, there is a good chance that you may not achieve it. Instead, give yourself small deadlines for small steps towards your resolution. Then give yourself a deadline for resolution itself. For example, you may want to lose 10 pounds. You can set the goal that you want to have lost 3 pounds by February 1st.  Then, you can set April 1st as your deadline for the 10 pounds.

Now that you have some helpful hints to achieve your New Year’s resolutions, it’s time to get started! Be sure to write your resolutions down and keep track of your progress. You can also make your resolutions with a friend and motivate each other. Give yourself a deadline to complete your resolutions. Also, do not forget to celebrate your progress. In my opinion, that’s the best part.

What are your New Years resolutions?
